This Hippo amigurumi pattern is for beginners but the finished product will make you look like an expert. Abbreviations
- mc = magic circle
- ch = chain stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet (US)

Materials
Yarn:
This yarn is a little thinner than other dk weight yarns and can be a little stiff to work with, but I really love the amount of colours available in this yarn with over 50 colours to choose from.
I chose the colour Dusty Rose for my hippo as it is nice lilac shade. Paintbox yarn has a really nice selection of colours to choose from, it comes in a huge palette of 56 colours (You can find it here at Love Crafts)
- 2.5 mm – crochet hook size
- DK/Light Worsted ( size 3) yarn in 1 colour
- Lilac – 280 yards (256 meters)
- Safety eyes
- Stitch marker
- Sewing needle and scissors
- Black embroidery thread/yarn (for eyes)

The hippo amigurumi pattern is worked in continuous rounds and uses basic crochet stitches. (see abbreviations listed above)
What yarn can I use?
This pattern is best suited to cotton or acrylic yarn. However, you can make your crochet plush using most yarn types. You should use a DK weight yarn to achieve the finished size of 20cm. In order to create a larger stuffed toy you can substitute for a thicker yarn. With this in mind you will also need to increase your hook size.
Hook size?
The crochet hook you choose will depend on the thickness of the yarn you are using. For example, you should use a smaller crochet hook than what is on your yarn label to make your amigurumi as this will prevent your toy stuffing from showing through your work.
